We beat St Johnstone 1-0 at Fir Park this afternoon in a match which was little more than a friendly. BD made one change to the side which lost at Tynecastle last week, with Stevie Nicholas getting a rare start in place of Derek Towsnley. The only goal of the game came after 23 mins when Stuart Elliott headed home a Kevin Twaddle corner, but other than that there were few incidents of real note in the first half. The second half was a bit livelier, and St Johnstone missed a great chance to equalise when they were awarded a penalty after Greig Strong needlessly handled in the box. However, Stevie Woods saved Sylla's penalty, which was probably St Johnstone's first shot on goal all afternoon. As it turned out, we held on more than comfortably for a deserved win.
Scott Leitch has been confirmed as the new club captain.
Speaking exclusively to the Unofficial Motherwell Homepage (oh yes, baby!), Pat
Nevin said:
"The manager decided last week that Scott would be the new
captain. Obviously I agree it is a very good choice as he is Motherwell
through and through. There is never a question over his commitment so I'm sure
the Well fans will generally applaud the move. Less well known is the influence
he has in the dressing room. Scott is a perfect pro and apart from always giving
his best, he ensures everyone around gives of their best as well. Totally
unselfish and desperate to win, these are qualities that are needed in a
captain. Scott also gives a great deal of his time without ceremony to helping
the club in the community, then again it is HIS community. He genuinely feels
honoured to be given the position and we are sure he will be a fine captain for
a long time to come."
The fixtures for the remaining five matches of the season will be announced by the SPL on Monday.
I'm taking a well earned holiday next week, so no updates until next weekend I'm afraid. However, my sidekick Ricky will post any major news items (including the fixture list) on our message board, so stay tuned!
