Motherwell FC News

April 2008

Saturday, April 5

5.20pm

Today's result: Celtic 0, Motherwell 1.

I'm still not sure I believe it.  And with ten men as well!  Beating the Old Firm is always enjoyable, but when it wrecks their supposed title challenge at the same time then it makes it all the sweeter.

Sounds like Lappin's goal after 33 mins was completely against the run of play, and once Malcolm was set off (very harshly, it would seem) early in the second half then it was real backs to the wall stuff.  It was torture listening to the radio for those final 20 mins or so, but we held on to record our first win at Celtic Park since 1999 and put us back into 3rd place in the league.

With Hearts in the bottom six, life just doesn't get much better than this.  Enjoy your evening!

Team (4-5-1): Graeme Smith, Quinn (McLean 86), Reynolds, Craigan, Hammell, Fitzpatrick, Malcolm, Hughes, Lappin, McCormack (Murphy 77), Porter.

Subs not used: Daniels, Lasley, McGarry, Darren Smith, Archdeacon.

Motherwell scorer: Lappin (33).

Booked: Porter, Graeme Smith

Sent off: Malcolm (51).

Attendance: 58,624.

Mark McGhee's post-match comments were as follows:
"We scored our goal against the run of play and we started the game poorly. No-one seemed to know who was picking up who in midfield.  It looked like it was a matter of time before Celtic scored, but then we scored and it was a bonus.  They threw a lot at us in the second half but even with 10 men I thought we looked fairly solid."

"We haven't done badly against them (the Old Firm). Today I thought we were maybe a little bit fortunate to get all three points.  But we worked hard for those points."

Keith Lasley has signed a new contract that ties him to the club until 2010.

The reserves went down 3-1 to their Celtic counterparts at Hannah Park in Shotts in midweek, with McHugh on target for the 'Well second eleven.  Team:
Daniels, Murray (Fallon 84), Nixon (Hutchinson 90), Gupwell, McLean, Meechan, Forbes (Wilson 71), Darren Smith, McGarry, Maguire, McHugh.

Martin Grehan will spend the remainder of the season on loan at 3rd division side Forfar Athletic.

Seems that the team is off to train in Malaga this week as a bonus for reaching the top six.  They certainly deserve it after today's result...
