Speaking in today's Evening Times, Terry Butcher looked ahead to the new season and said:
"Last season was a difficult campaign for us and it was like watching different teams at times.  When we were on form, we performed really well and picked up some smashing victories, beating both of the Old Firm.  But, when we weren't playing well, we were terrible - and the ugly was our disciplinary record with so many bookings and red cards.  However, I'm sure the guys have learned from it all and it will make them better players this season.  The feeling among the players is we'll do much better this season than perhaps a lot of people expect us to, so we're looking forward to getting started.

"We can't do any worse than we managed last season in terms of where we finished in the league. The only way for us is up. We must try to be more consistent and make it more difficult for teams to beat us.  We can score goals and we've brought in a few new faces who I hope can help us improve.

"Unless Stephen (Pearson) leaves, then I wouldn't expect us to be making any more signings.  We'll just have to wait and see what happens with that one."

Former Celtic and Arsenal defender Scott Marshall, 30, has joined Motherwell on trial. Edinburgh-born Marshall, brother of new Fir Park goalkeeper Gordon, began his career as a trainee at Highbury in 1991 before joining Southampton on a free transfer in July 1998. A two-month loan spell at Celtic followed in 1999, before he joined Brentford for £250,000 in October 1999.

Scott Leitch has been cleared of head-butting Hibs youngster Scott Brown in the match at Easter Road at the end of last season. The SFA's disciplinary chief said today there was no case to answer.

Freed 'Well player Dougie Ramsay has joined St Mirren on trial with a view to securing a permanant deal.

The team from last night's 0-0 draw with Stenhousemuir was as follows:
Marshall, Corrigan, Hammell, Lasley, Craigan, Partridge, Leitch, MacDonald, Clarkson (Craig), Pearson, Burns.
Subs not used: Ewings, Fagan, Kinniburgh, Ballantyne, Quinn.
