| The Official Site reports that the club are close to agreeing a three-year deal with Wigan midfielder Roberto Martinez. The 27-year-old has been linked with Motherwell for several weeks and it looks as though the deal is finally going to go through. |
Newspaper reports suggest that former Celtic coach and Morton manager
Billy Stark is set to be named as Motherwell's new Head of Youth
Development. Former 'Well striker Tommy Coyne is also in the frame,
and both men have been interviewed by Pat Nevin and Billy Davies. The
club's existing Youth Development coach, Dave McParland, is retiring next
month and more emphasis is to be placed on youth. PN said:
"We've had a lot of applications. Everyone has a fair chance
and we won't be rushed into it. This is important for the club and
we'll sit down and work things out. It may happen this month or
next."
Today's papers confirm that Sheffield Utd's David Kelly will
sign a two-year contract with Motherwell today. The 35-year-old played in
the Republic of Ireland's 1990 World Cup quarter-final, and has scored more than
200 goals for clubs including Newcastle, West Ham, Sunderland and Tranmere.
Speaking yesterday, he said:
"I've never played in Scotland and I'm always being told it's a
brilliant country so that's something I'll see for myself. I was offered
the reserve team manager's job at Sheffield United and Neil Warnock, the
manager, was really good to me but I really want to keep playing and I couldn't
have done both. I've got my UEFA B badge but I didn't want to hang up my boots
just yet. There are still a couple of years and some goals left in me. If
I had became a coach then I wouldn't have played and that's not for me right
now. So this so a good fresh opportunity at this stage. I know Billy from
our time together at Leicester a few years back and I'm interested in what he's
offering. I feel I have something to offer a top-class side and the
opportunity to play in the Scottish Premier League is appealing."
"I keep abreast of the Scottish game on televison. And I also know Tommy Johnson pretty well and we talk quite regularly so I know a little about what to expect."
