In today's local press, the club have hit back at the 19 players they made redundant before the end of the season.  Of the 19 players, 10 were out of contract anyway at the end of the campaign, but the other nine each had at least another year still to go.  Last week, Greg Strong announced that the nine players would be contacting the SPL with a view to taking sanctions against the club, but Motherwell spokesman Ramsay Smith (no, I don't know who he is either) hit back, saying:
"The fact that playing staff and non-playing staff had to be made redundant at Motherwell was deeply regrettable for everyone at the club.  It was a very painful decision, but had these measures not been taken then the club would’ve closed.  It was a matter of either some people being made redundant or everyone losing their jobs."

The spokesman also confirmed that the club had received complaints from some of the players, and these will be discussed at the next board meeting on June 20.

On the subject of a possible takeover, Smith gave the following update:
"We’re still in the process of holding discussions, but the administrator is in contact with interested parties.  It actually takes a bit of time before anything could possibly come to fruition. We’ve really reached a bit of a hiatus as far as news is concerned, as they’ve been provided with the financial information which they are now having to digest.  I really don’t think we will hear much over the next two weeks.  There are all kinds of certainties surrounding Scottish football at the moment, particularly the issue of television money which hasn’t been settled yet, and that isn’t helping matters.  If that were taken care of, it would certainly help anyone who is considering putting together a bid."

Don't forget about the 'Well Worth Saving Quiz in the Davie Cooper Suite on Thursday night.  Teams wishing to reserve a table should contact either Dave (0771 251 3997) or Matt (0790 422 5568).
