After several weeks without much happening round Fir Park way, there were finally a couple of items of news yesterday.

Firstly, we have signed Richie Foran, a 24-year old Irish striker, on a one-year deal after his contract with Carlisle Utd came to an end. The 6ft 1" forward netted just four times last season for the Cumbrians, and also had a spell on loan with Oxford Utd. Foran originally cost Carlisle £100,000 when he joined them from Eircom League side Shelbourne.

Terry Butcher, currently in Portugal as a Euro 2004 commentator, is quoted as saying:
"He is a good, athletic striker – an honest player who puts himself about. It’s a good opportunity for him – and for us as well. I need to bring in four players so hopefully Foran is the first and won’t be the last"

It seems as though Foran has a somewhat questionable disciplinary record. He almost signed for Aberdeen in 2001, but the Dons pulled the plug on the deal when they learned of his conduct both on and off the field, which apparently include:

  • Being sent off once last season, for fighting in the tunnel at half-time, and also collecting a total of five yellow cards
  • Going AWOL before a Republic of Ireland Under-21 game
  • Being convicted for threatening behaviour at the end of a game against Lincoln in 2002. He was sentenced to 200 hours of community service as well as being ordered to pay £50 compensation to a steward caught up in the brawl and £800 in costs.
  • And finally, he is reported to be currently awaiting trial for beating up a fan in the director's box at a game last season!

Sounds like he'll fit in just fine!

Meanwhile, midfielder Jason Dair has signed a two-year deal with Livingston.

Terry Butcher has confirmed he is interesting in signing Dundee Utd's Jim Paterson, but says there is no chance of him bringing back a Euro 2004 star:
“I can’t afford any of them, not even a Latvian, especially after yesterday’s performance."

Motherwell owner and former chairman John Boyle was awarded the OBE in the Queens' Birthday Honours List for his services to business.

The club will be holding an Open Day at Fir Park on Sunday, July 25 which will see the launch of the (hideous) new home strip.
