Dutch striker Edwin van Ankeren has arrived at Fir Park on
trial. The 32-year-old has played with several clubs in Holland and
Belgium, and was most recently with EA Guingamp in France having helped them
to promotion to the 1st Division with 9 goals last year. Speaking
yesterday, Billy Davies said:
"He's a player we are looking at now, but the short term
is not a priority. We need to give the current players the chance to show us
what they can do."
Meanwhile, BD has admitted he fears losing Said
Chibba to a richer club before the end of the season. He said:
"Said Chiba is an excellent player. He's experienced and
has played at a lot of big clubs before. We are seeing if he can come over here, get used to the pace
of the game and calm things down for us
in the middle of the park. He's here till the end of the season and we see
the full story with his club then. The biggest fear is that other clubs will be looking at him
as well. But it's early days and we'll talk to him again in our own time."
BD has confirmed there will be no more signings before
tomorrow's transfer deadline:
"There is no rush for me to move for players. I´m sure a lot of agents
will be contacting managers today to try and offer them various players, but I´m
not looking for a quick fix. Edwin is certainly a player we are looking at
to possibly bring in. He´s a striker and has looked the part in training and we
are a little short up front at the moment. But the short-term is not a
priority for me. We are trying to think more long-term while trying to also make
sure we finish as high up the table as possible. But I must praise our
young players who have come into the team and performed really well. It is
vital that we give Steve Nicholas, Keith Lasley, Steve Pearson, James McFadden,
Dougie Ramsay and Martin Wood an opportunity to show us what they can do.
Stuart Elliot took a big step coming here from Ireland. Now it is important he
works at different parts of his game, and playing and scoring goals for Northern
Ireland is fantastic for the player and the club. Usually when you bring
these young lads through you like to have as many experienced players as
possible around them to pass on advice. But our boys have been looking after
each other and have performed really well. Obviously we cannot ask too
much of them, but at least we´ve given them a chance."
