Hearts beat us 3-0 at Tynecastle this afternoon, without having to break sweat. A disappointing showing all round was made even more unbearable by a shocking performance from the referee, who turned down a decent looking penalty claim and didn't even book Steve Pressley never mind send him off for THREE elbowing incidents involving Motherwell players. However, while it's all very well to blame the referee, we didn't deserve to take anything at all from today's game. We were second to ever ball in midfield and offered virtually nothing upfront. The defeat ends any lingering hopes we had of making the top six.
Derek Townsley was stretchered off during this afternoon's game with a serious looking head knock. Apparently he has been taken to hospital, although no further news is available as yet.
Speaking after the match, Billy Davies said:
"Derek has a broken nose and was concussed, and is away to the hospital
for x-rays, but we don't know the full extent of his injuries. (Kevin)
Twaddle has been struggling and he had to come off in the first half, and
Hammell had a little groin strain after the break. But there's not a lot you can
do about these things."
When asked about the penalty claim, he added:
"It could have been a turning point, but it's difficult to say, although
from where I was standing I thought Adams was impeded. If we had scored
then perhaps it could have turned out differently."
"It was always going to be difficult for us and we can't expect to finish so high when we lose nine players. Now it's a matter of looking at the players we have got and getting them playing from now until the end of the season."
Edwin van Ankeren has returned home after Motherwell pulled out of a deal to sign him before yesterday's transfer deadline. Apparenly van Ankeren's agent came back looking for more money from the club.
A couple of interesting bits of gossip heard at today's game. Firstly, the club have been forced to introduce a new badge for next season and it was unveiled at last night's "an evening with..." at Fir Park. Apparently it features some of elements from the existing badge (but not the Ravenscraig skyline!), and incorporates some water from a well (?), the crest of Dalziel of Hamilton (??), and some blue and red trimming(???)
Also, the new strip for next season will be predominantly claret with a little amber trimming and will feature a very small badge.
Lee McCulloch scored for Wigan this afternoon in their 2-1 victory over Wycombe.
Andy Goram had to settle for a place on the bench for Manchester United in this afternoon's game at Anfield.
