6.30pm Terry Butcher was delighted with the size of the crowd at today's game, and
hopes we can attract similar attendances in the future:
Motherwell rounded off the season with a 2-1 win over Dundee at Fir Park this afternoon, in front of a crowd of 6,574. We missed several good chances to kill the game off when leading 2-0, but held on for a deserved win after Dundee pulled a goal back midway through the second half. The only change to the team from Tuesday night was the introduction of William Kenniburgh at centre-half to replace the suspended Martyn Corrigan. The youngster went on to have an excellent full debut and barely put a foot wrong throughout the entire 90 mins. We started the game brightly and had the ideal opportunity to take the lead after only 10 mins, when James McFadden went down in the box and referee Willie Young, surely Scotland's most incompetent grade one official, awarded a penalty. In all honestly it looked as though Faddy had dived, and perhaps justice was done when his spot-kick was saved by the Dundee goalkeeper. Still, we didn't have long to wait for the opening goal, with Dirk Lehmann heading home a cross from close range only a few mins later. McFadden didn't have one of his better games today, and missed a complete sitter midway through the half when he blasted the ball straight at the 'keeper with an open goal to aim at. However, Stuart Elliott capitalised on a loose pass-back just before half-time to send Motherwell in 2-0 up at the interval. The second 45 mins started with Motherwell again on top, and we hit the woodwork after Elliott had set-up substitute Fagan. However, Dundee got themselves back into the match courtesy of another wrongly awarded penalty, with Caballero stepping up to score. The vistors enjoyed long peroids of possession at this point, without ever seriously looking like grabbing an equaliser. We were still creating chances at the other end, but were unable to add to our lead and eventually ran out 2-1 winners. The final whistle was greeted with the customary last day of the season pitch invasion, and the players eventually emerged in the director's box to take a well-deserved round of applause at the end of a traumatic season in the club's history. Roll on the new campaign, and hopefully also a buyer...?
More good news for the 'Well Worth Saving campaign. Today's T-shirts were sold out by around 2.15pm, which means the fund will now be a good few quid better off. Don't worry if you didn't get one, because more will be available at the 5-aside tournament on June 29 (see the WWS Site for details).
Today's Scotland on Sunday contains an interesting article on Billy Davies (remember him?)
