11pm The result of the ballot was announced earlier this evening on the Official Site, and surprise surprise a majority of DC Stand season ticket holders REJECTED the club's proposal to relocate them to the East Stand for the Celtic game. The statement released by MFC, entitled Fans Reject Plans to Boost Player Cash(?) reads as follows: The club proposed to relocate Season Ticket Holders from seats in the Davie Cooper Stand at Fir Park to seats in the East Stand for the final home match of the season against Celtic on May 22.
The Board of the Club suggested the move to accommodate more Celtic supporters at the ground. Additional revenue generated would have been given to manager Terry Butcher to strengthen his squad for next season.
The proposal was put to a ballot of supporters holding Season Tickets for the Davie Cooper Stand but the move was rejected by a majority.
John Boyle, Motherwell’s majority shareholder, said
tonight:
“The club has had another successful season but if we are to make progress we must explore every option to raise cash that can be directed to playing resources. We have a very loyal core of supporters who have been tremendous through difficult times but we do need more supporters turning up to watch games at Fir Park. If they do it will go a long way to enhancing one of the most exciting young teams in Scotland.” This morning's tabloids claimed that a "no" vote could result in the club being unable to afford a new contract for Scott McDonald! Nice bit of scaremongering methinks. Tickets for the Celtic game go on general sale from Fir Park on Thursday morning. Of course, the problem now is that the East and DC Stands are almost certain to be infiltrated by Celtic fans... The reserves defeated their Inverness counterparts 4-0 at Fir Park
this afternoon in their final match of the season. Donnelly, Maguire
and Clarkson were on target for the 'Well second string, with Inverness
defender Hendy scoring an own goal. Team: Yesterday's Evening Times reported that Barry John Corr had
been handed a free transfer along with Alex Burns. Meanwhile, former
'Well players Derek Adams and Steven Craig have both been freed by Aberdeen
(nae luck!) while David Cowan has been released by St Johnstone. Newspaper reports suggest that the club have offered the players double their normal win bonus if they beat Rangers and Celtic in the next two matches. The incentive, in the region of £600-a-man, is probably to ward off suggestions of "lying down" after what happened to Dunfermline two years ago. |
