The following statement was posted to the Official Motherwell Website this evening...

At a Board Meeting at Fir Park this afternoon Directors discussed progress in the recruitment of a new Manager for the Club. Candidates, already identified in the Press, together with a number of others were considered. Pat Nevin, as Director of Football was authorised to continue discussions with the likeliest candidates.

Pat undertook to report back the outcome of his discussions by no later than Thursday of next week when the Board will be available to review a short leet.

The Club has to date received fifty five "serious" applications for the post and is currently considering seven candidates with appropriate coaching and Management experience at various levels in Scottish , English and European football.

Emerging from the Meeting John Boyle said "Directors recognised supporter's interest in seeing a Manager in place as soon as possible. However, we trust fans will have patience and will understand that it takes time to source the right man for the future".

Today's Scotsman reports that there are five candidates in the frame for the manager's job: John Philliben, Ian McCall, John Aldridge, Eric Black and Colin Todd(?)

Today's Sun reports that Tommy Burns is in talks with Motherwell about becoming our new manager, less than 24 hours after he knocked back the St Johnstone job.  The Sun claims that Burns is now our No 1 target, however the cost of employing him and his assistant Billy Stark would be around £200,000 a year in joint salaries.

An interesting article on our very own Stuart Elliott (as sponsored by the Unofficial Motherwell Homepage) is available from the BBC Website.
