Ricky's report of yesterday's game against Hearts is now available!

Pat Nevin has admitted that he could be next for the sack if he fails to come up with the right team boss to replace Billy Davies. Speaking in today's press, he said:
"Billy Davies was my appointment, and I still insist it wasn't a mistake. He took over when we were at the bottom of the league and he saved us from relegation. In his second season we were only a hairsbreadth from making it into Europe. Yet some fans, very unfairly indeed, were calling for his head when the team finished in fourth place in the table.

"I'm not under contract myself because I didn't want to be. The chairman offered me one. So if I don't come up with the right man this time, it's fair to say my future at Fir Park would be very much on the line."

It appears as though Pat will not be short of candidates to choose from. He's received 40 enquiries already - two from Brazil, one from Italy, two from Wales and rest from Scotland and England:

"Some of the psople who've been on to me are in coaching and management jobs at the moment. So Motherwell must be quite an attractive proposition."

Speaking after yesterday's victory over Hearts, John Philliben said:
"I knew they had the potential to play like this and I'm delighted for the first win and the first three points of the season. It was a good performance by the team who all did well. It's a pity it took the losing of their manager for the players to put in a performance like that. I don't think it's a question of them feeling guilty but I definitely think some players owed Billy a performance. We had the same players, followed the same routine and worked as closely to a normal week as possible.

We could have got more goals. Antti Niemi had some great saves for them and I thought David Kelly's first half effort was in. Stuart Elliott should have scored a third near the end but was a bit greedy although I suppose he's starting to think like a striker now. My big worry is that this will be a one off situation but I'm confident we have the players with the potential to keep the standard up."

The Sunday Mail reports that former Romanian World Cup player Marius Lacatus is one of the candidates who has applied for the vacant manager's job. Another front runner is believed to be Bradford assistant manager Billy Brown.

Meanwhile, the Sunday Herald contains an interesting feature on Pat Nevin. It confirms that BD was indeed sacked, and in addition to the 40 or so applications that have already been received, some candidates are being "headhunted". PN has drawn up a list of 33 possible names. Ian McCall is again being touted as the frontrunner although the article questions whether Craig Brown would want the job.

The full article is available from the Sunday Herald website.

An article in one of this morning's tabloids claims that Karl Ready's girlfriend has fled their home after he beat her up.
