FADDY'S MAGIC SUBMERGES THE CLYDE

Scottish Cup Fourth Round

Clyde  0     Motherwell  2

TWO FABULOUS FINISHES FROM James McFadden proved to be the difference in this Cup Tie at a cold and breezy Broadwood. Returning from suspension McFadden coolly slotted home in either half to send Motherwell into the Quarter Finals.

Clyde attacked early and it was Kane who fired well over running onto the pass from Falconer. Then it took a great block from Vaughan to deny Kane connecting once again. Motherwell got a free kick when Kernaghan was high on Partridge as the two clashed near the box. Partridge recovered and his clip allowed Fagan to lay the ball into the path of Adams. From 18 yards the low shot forced a great block from Halliwell and as the ball ran wide Pearson and Halliwell chased. The home keeper appeared to catch Pearson but there was no penalty, with Halliwell requiring treatment for a head knock. The home response was a shot from McConalogue which was well wide. Ramsay and Adams then combined to give Craig a chance but his header was held. There then appeared to be a fair tackle by Hammel who won from Ross and as he was about to send McFadden away Referee Clark decided it was a home free kick, though Partridge headed the take away. Some supreme skill from McFadden saw him nutmeg Mensing who in turn body-checked the Scotland man giving away the free kick. Somehow Pearson, in isolation, managed to head the free kick over when it seemed easier to score. Motherwell pushed up again and after Craig was fouled near the corner flag it took a combination of Potter and Kernaghan to clear as McFadden lurked. The home side tried to create themselves and McConalogue's lay off for Ross failed to trouble Dubordeau.

An error by Fagan then gave Falconer a chance to attack but after making it to the box his effort was somewhat weak. Falconer then almost set up McConalogue but a superb stop from Corrigan ended the danger. McFadden was then taken late by Ross though Motherwell failed to take advantage from the free kick. Clyde then had a spell of possession but failed to trouble Motherwell with the ending shot from Cosgrove poor. The visitors then pushed forward with menace, Pearson being blocked by Ross but as the ball broke to Fagan with options he played a poor ball forward. Hagen then twisted and turned on the edge of the Motherwell box but his finishing shot didn't concern Dubordeau much. Still suffering from the earlier head-knock Clyde Keeper Halliwell had to leave the field and was replaced by Morrison. The Broadwood side then forced a corner but climbing by Kane gave Motherwell the free kick. Then a loose ball on the edge of the visiting area presented Ross with a chance but he fired wide. Terrific play from McFadden then opened up the home defence but there were no takers as the ball ran through the box. Clyde's next attack won them a corner which Falconer met but could only head past the post. Good linking play involving Fagan and McFadden then gave Pearson a chance to shoot but he was forced wide and in the end Morrison saved comfortably. McFadden again had the home defence in trouble though after he had sent Pearson wide the cross was cleared by Kernaghan. He set in motion a Clyde attack which ended when Falconer headed towards goal but Dubordeau saved easily. However, it was Motherwell who broke the stalemate and it was McFadden who made the difference. Hammel's chip forward saw McFadden hold of Potter and he slotted past Morrison to open the scoring. The home response was a shot from Millen which was wildly high. Then Ross shot from25 yards but gain Dubordeau wasn't troubled. Just before the break as Ramsay lay injured play was waved on much to the annoyance of the Motherwell players and fans alike. Despite looking well offside McConalogue fired in a shot from 18 yards which was saved.

Half-Time     Clyde  0     Motherwell  1

Motherwell resumed on the attack with Craig setting up Corrigan but his shot drifted past the post. McFadden then looked to have won the ball from Kernaghan but the free kick went Clyde's way. McConalogue took the lay-off but his 20 yard shot was wide. Kernaghan was then lucky to escape a booking when he was way late on Craig. Chipped forward McFadden crossed in the direction of Pearson but he was beaten by a Kernaghan clearance. The home side then made another change, McConalogue replaced by Shields. Motherwell then forced a corner but Pearson's flick on was adjudged offside. The Broadwood side almost levelled when Ross supplied Hagen but he saw his shot blocked. Vaughan bravely prevented Cosgrove taking advantage of the loose ball which found it's way to Dubordeau. The game's first booking was somewhat farcical when Vaughan saw yellow. He was caught by Ross and got up to remonstrate with the Clyde Captain, who somehow escaped unpunished. Referee Clark somewhat lost the plot when Adams fouled Hagen but instead warned Ramsay. It took a terrific Vaughan interception to stop Millen going through on Dubordeau. Again Kernaghan failed to see yellow when not for the first time he flattened Craig. Up stepped McFadden but he struck the wall which was nowhere near the 10 yards back it should have been. Motherwell then almost doubled their lead when McFadden and Ramsay linked with the latter shooting narrowly past from 20 yards. The Fir Parkers then forced successive corners and as Hammel crossed low the ball was somehow missed by everyone. The home side made a further change when Falconer left in place of Convery. Halfway through the half Fagan had a great chance to send McFadden clear but was short with his pass. A minute later McFadden was pulled back by Kane but there was no card shown. And shortly afterwards McFadden was again the recipient of a crude Kane tackle. There was dissent from Shields but Referee Clark chose only to warn him. Adams strode up and fired in a free kick which Morrison made a hash of saving, conceding an unnecessary corner. Fagan saw his shot blocked and the danger averted. Clyde forced a corner of their own and although Ramsay headed out Kane passed up a great opportunity by sending a cross behind.

Motherwell made change when Craig was replaced by Clarkson. A lunge by Cosgrove on Ramsay went unpunished by Referee Clark who seemed content on booking no home players. Soon afterwards Motherwell all but put the tie beyond the home side with a goal of pure class. Hammel chipped the ball forward to McFadden just inside his own half. Advancing, he nut-megged Mensing and raced to the box before expertly curling the ball home. A minute afterwards Clyde should have pulled a goal back but Shields, onto a loose ball and just 8 yards out, beat Dubordeau and the far post. David Partridge was the next Motherwell player booked, a rather innocuous challenge on Convery deemed bookable. Moments after a Kernaghan trundler trickled past Motherwell almost scored again. Partridge headed a corner back across the box where Pearson sent a header towards the far post only for Cosgrove to head clear. Play swung to the other end where Corrigan did superbly well to deny Shields. The ball ran towards the goal were Fagan was on hand to attempt a clearance which struck Cosgrove and handball was awarded. A one-two between Clarkson and Ramsay had the latter fouled by Mensing but there was no penalty awarded. Twice in two minutes Motherwell made changes, Fagan for Lasley then McFadden left to a huge cheer from the large travelling support with Lehmann taking his place. Within the last couple of minutes Kernaghan met a Potter cutback and shot from 18 yards where Dubordeau made a terrific block with the follow up from Cosgrove also well blocked but offside had been given. And then in the last minute Dubordeau made an excellent block from a low Potter drive as Motherwell relaxed.
