Pre-season Friendly Match

Carlisle Utd 3, Motherwell 3

LAST-GASP GREIG SPARES 'WELL

Carlisle United 3 Motherwell 3
Despite dominating the match from start to finish Well trailed at half-time to a free header which Buff and Stevie McMillan deceided to leave to eache other. Their second goal was a penalty, one of their strikers quite literally fell over his own feet and the Ref, who had a bad game all evening totally ignoring their centre-backs' continual assaults on Motherwell players, gave a penalty. Howie went the wrong way and that was 0-2. Howie was the subject of some unnecessary abuse as every time he got the ball two or three people told him in no uncertain terms to "go away" or words to that effect. Well then pulled a goal back when TC went down under a little pressure in the box, nobody (except Carlisle's fans and players) complained of course and TC got up to shimmy the keeper the wrong way and pull Well right back into it. The second goal, equalising things, was a fine passing move which ended with John Hendry slipping the ball to the side on 18-yard line where Toastie hammered it high into the right-hand corner of the net. Seconds later Falc crossed and Mickey Weir only just failed to connect at the near post. Their big No.6 had already enraged the Motherwell support by clattering and jumping all over Toastie, and he really endeared himself by putting Carlisle ahead on 81 in what was quite literally a break-away. Again, it was a free header, all too easy and a bit worrying. Frank Rolling, who had a great first 30 minutes, had gone off injured and the defence was a little shaky after that, the third Carlisle goal proving that. However, Motherwell were not to be denied a leveller, and in the final minute Eddie May sent in a rocket which their keeper brilliantly palmed round the top corner. Mickey swung the corner in, it was only partially cleared, and there was Greig Denholm, of all people, to rasp the ball into the net and send us all a little wild. All in all it was a useful match, and at last we managed to score. It also showed the team has some character as they could just have packed it in at 2 down.

And so the Motherwell bandwagon rolls on to Hartlepool, scene of a fine double from the White Brazillian back in 1992.
