Despite the scoreline, this was probably our best performance yet. There was very little between the teams in a match that was spoiled somewhat by several ridiculous refereeing decisions, not least the sending-off of Barry Knight in the second half when the entire game had been played in a very friendly and sporting manner. The ref then proceeded to further incense the Inter Motherwell players and supporters by allowing Rangers’ second goal to stand when it was blatantly offside. The match saw Inter ‘Well field several new players, and they certainly made a difference as we consistently matched a team who had the advantage of having played together regularly for several years. Indeed, we would surely have at least drawn the game had it not been for a first half penalty miss by the otherwise excellent Iain “Sheep” McPherson. As it turned out, our only goal was nothing more than a consolation, scored a few minutes before the end. Super-sub Ricky Mullen sprinted clear of the Rangers defence and brilliantly chipped over the advancing ‘keeper before celebrating with a “git in there” and a merry jig!
Man of the Match : Despite that penalty miss, Sheepy was once again outstanding.
Donkey of the Match : Me (again). I’d like to apologise to everyone for my pathetic performance. Special mention must also go to Ally Milne for his attempt at scoring from a free-kick. The ball must have travelled all of 2 inches.

Oh dear. Probably the only good thing we could take out of this game was that, after going in 5-0 down at half time, we at least managed to keep it respectable in the second 45 mins. Clearly, a lot of hard work is going to be required before Euronet ’98 next summer.
Man of the Match : Ian “sheep” McPherson. An excellect second-half debut from the young midfielder.
Donkey of the Match : ME! And perhaps also Ricky for his woeful penalty miss!
Team – Frankie Stannage, Stevie McInall, Tony Dobson, Alan Stewart, Graham Barnstaple, Robbie Hamilton, David Finlay, Roy Paton, Ian Buchanan, James Reid, Ricky Mullen.
Sub – Ian McPherson
