29.4.96 Paul Lambert didn’t win the Player of the Year award last night, the award going to Rangers’ Paul Gascoigne.
26.4.96 The Motherwell Times reports that the following six players are all out of contract at the end of the season : Paul Lambert, Rob McKinnon, Chris McCart, Tommy Coyne, John Philliben and Billy Davies. Alex McLeish says that they all will be offered new deals and hopes they can be presuaded to stay at the club.
Motherwell have striking problems for tomorrow’s match against Raith. Both Dougie Arnott and Alex Burns are suspended until the end of the season, and Tommy Coyne is struggling with a hip injury.
24.4.96 Motherwell have arranged a pre-season friendly against Portuguese champions Porto, managed by former England manager Bobby Robson. The match will take place at Fir Park on Saturday August 3.
23.4.96 Rob McKinnon has been withdrawn from the Scotland B squad for tonight’s match in Denmark with a knock he sustained during the Rangers game at the weekend. Paul Lambert and Brian Martin will both start the match.
22.4.96 Just in case there was any remaining doubt, Motherwell will definitely not be involved in the relegation play-off following Partick’s 2-1 defeat at the weekend.
The new home strip should be available from the 31st of May. Rumour has it that the claret band on the chest has been dropped.
19.4.96 Tomorrow’s match against Rangers will be Dougie Arnott’s last appearance of the season. A booking he picked up in the Aberdeen match last weekend has earned him a two-game ban which will start next week.
Tickets for the away match against Raith Rovers next week will now go on sale at Fir Park at 5pm tomorrow for season ticket holders only. Any unsold tickets, priced 10 pounds, will go on general sale on Monday. Motherwell have been allocated only 1,000 tickets for the match.
A report in one of this morning’s papers is suggesting that Aberdeen have stepped up their interest in Rob McKinnon. If McKinnon were to move to Pittodrie then Motherwell would receive a transfer fee for him.
18.4.96 Paul Lambert is one of four players nominated for the SPFA Player of the Year award. The other candidates are Rangers’ Paul Gascoigne and Andy Goram, and Celtic’s Tom Boyd. The winner will be announced a week on Sunday.
17.4.96 This morning’s Daily Record is claiming that French club Rennes are set to sign Rob McKinnon when his contract expires in June. Under the new Bosman ruling, Motherwell would not receive any transfer fee if McKinnon decides to move to a club within the European Union. Clubs in Switzerland and Germany are also reported to be monitoring the situation.
16.4.96 A crowd of over 3,000 saw Wolves beat Motherwell 2-1 in Jim Griffen’s benefit match last night. Jim managed to play for the first 15 mins before being replaced by Jamie Dolan.
15.4.96 Alex Mcleish has been named manager of the month for the month of March after leading Motherwell to safety in the Premier League.
Jim Griffen is expected to play for part of his Testimonial match against Wolves tonight. Kick off is at 7.45pm and admission prices are 8 pounds for adults and 4 pounds for juveniles/OAPs.
Scott Howie, Paul Lambert, Brian Martin and Rob McKinnon look likely to be named in the Scotland squad for the B international against Denmark on April 23rd.
9.4.96 Motherwell’s away match against Raith on Saturday 27th April will be all ticket as the ground capacity will be reduced due to building work. Tickets go on sale on Sunday 21st April for season ticket holders only, and any remaining tickets will go on public sale the following day.
Motherwell will have new home and away strips next season. No details have been announced but expect the home strip to be along familiar lines.
Saturday’s 3-0 win over Hibs was Motherwell 7th successive match without conceding a goal – a new club record.
4.4.96 Tickets for the home match against Rangers on Saturday 20th April go on sale at Fir Park next Tuesday at 9am. The tickets on sale will be for Motherwell fans only.
Tommy Coyne has equalled Motherwell’s record for international caps. Tommy played for the Republic of Ireland for the 12th time as a Motherwell player against Russia two weeks ago, the same number of times as George Stevenson was capped for Scotland in the 1930s.
1.4.96 Miodrag Krivokapic has left Motherwell to sign for Raith Rovers for “a nominal fee”, and will combine his playing duties with coaching the Raith youth team. Mio was signed by Tommy McLean on a free transfer from Dundee United in 1993 and has been an excellent servant to the club over the last few years. Meanwhile Owen Coyle was again linked with a move to Fir Park at the weekend, but as the transer deadline has now passed any move will not take place until the summer.
Paul Lambert and Rob McKinnon have still not signed new contracts with the club, and Chris McCart is also out of contract in the summer. Lambert has been watched by Aberdeen and QPR while McKinnon has been constantly linked with Bolton. Another rumour is that Aberdeen are interested in all three players.
Jamie Dolan missed the 2-0 win over Partick with a hamstring injury, but should be OK for Saturday’s home match with Hibs.
